SDA church reclaims 200

The Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) one of the world’s oldest denominations has said it has reclaimed 200 members in Malawi who split five years ago from the “mainstream” SDA Church to form a different church.

The church confirmed both the split and reclamation in a letter dated 8 April and was made available to The Nation newspaper over the week.

The letter signed by Pastor for the returning members, Pastor Dennis Matekenya indicated that the SDA Church witnessed a break away five years ago.

It further said the grouping established its own church which was named True Vision Church , Matekenya confirmed this.

This has come at a time when the Church’s Central Malawi Field has announced that 200 of its break away church have come back to the mainstream church.

“This is a landmark and record reclaiming of both the church building and church members who have been outside the church for the last five years due to some disagreements with the mainstream SDA Church ,” wrote Matekenya.

The feat has led the Central Malawi Field to organize “the first ever press conference for the SDA Church in the Central Malawi Field,” read part of the letter.

The Field has also announced that it has organized a press conference as a way of welcoming the members.

“The purpose of this press conference is to share with the general public through the media about the return of more than 200 church members to the Seventh-Day Adventist Church from True Vision Church,” Said Matekenya.

He said this is also to allow the members from the breakaway church to tell of their experience and what led them to return to their original church.

However the SDA President, Saustin Mfune refused to comment on the matter when contacted yesterday saying it is a regional matter. He also declined to state the population of SDA Church members in the country.

The church formally established in 1863 is a protestant Christian denomination which is distinguished mainly by its observance of Saturday, the "seventh day" of the week, as the Sabbath. Among its founders was Ellen White, whose extensive writings are still held in high regard by the church today. -
